i wrote my first book about a little girl who wanted to be a ballerina but didn’t have the right shoes when i was seven.
Me writing with intense focus on my dad's lap
i’d spend hours and hours at my tiny humxn Mickey Mouse desk with fire engine red table legs and plastic chairs drawing, coloring, and recording myself talking as if i was the queen of my small city radio.
i wrote and read. Read and wrote.
Writing like creative expression and performing has always been a part of me and a heavy dose of what i wanted my life to be like.
Growing up i wanted to be Judy Blume. As a teenager, a poet like John Lennon, Eddie Vedder, and Courtney Love. In my 20s, Gloria Anzaldúa, Clarissa Pinkola Estes, Sarah Mclachlan, and Tori Amos. In my 30s to now, Dani Shapiro, Rachel Pollack, and Don Miguel Ruiz.
And throughout my entire desire to be a writer, i wrote.
i penned poems to first girlfriends on the back of our community college’s course catalogs, in cars while waiting for lovers to stop spatting, on torn notebook pages passed through hands like notes in class and meant for my biggest crush.
i typed my poems up, put them in notebooks, titled them, and stored them on my bookshelf.
In 8th grade, i learned how to bind and make my own book and wrote my first About the Author bio.
Pic is of the actual book i made!
In college, i wrote essays that created movements within me and taught me the power of words and language to emote feelings, visions, and hope that would manifest into real world change.
When i left my full-time nonprofit job in 2016, i wrote op-ed pieces for media companies like BET and Global Grind, for magazines like Curve, and started my own column, Trending Tea, for the largest LGBTQ newspaper in Texas, The Dallas Voice.
i self-published my first book in 2014 which started off as a blog post and ultimately landed me my first publishing deal.
Through the actual act of writing, i became a writer.
And i’m a write to this day because i write. And write . . . and write . . . and write . . .
i write things that will only be published in my blog or in my newsletter. Things that are short enough to become Instagram captions, good enough to become website copy for myself and flients (friends + clients). i pen things that are the start of books but never become them—and things that ultimately will. i write letters to you, to me, to no one in particular. i write to the ether, the Universe things that will you/we/us will never see.
Picture of my writing notebooks no one will ever see.
i’m a writer because i write…every. single. day.
i’m a writer because it's hardwired in the very DNA of me.
i’m a writer because i choose to be one every moment in all my days.
And you are whoever YOU tell yourself you are in conscious and unconscious moments. Ultimately, what you DO is who you become.
So if you want to be a writer, write.
If you want to be a poet, pen poems.
If you want to create change, begin with changing yourself.
If you want to be a star, be like Sun and shine when no one is looking.
If you want to be painter, pick up a paintbrush and begin.
If you want to be a witch, start communing with nature, your intuition, and your cells.
If you want to be a business owner, ask yourself what kind of business would you like to do? Then go run it.
Whatever it is you want to be, go embody and do the thing now. That’s what makes you the thing you want to be—not the accolades, the book deals, the hundred thousands of followers, the fame, or your Insta-worthy altar.
Go do the thing you want be, now.
And then do it tomorrow. And the day after. And the day after that.
Keep choosing to be this thing over and over again in the flow times and the stuck times and watch your life become it.
i promise you doing the thing you want to do works. 😘
Now go be proof of what you/i/we/us can do!
i love you. You got this. i believe in you.
in lak’ech xo-b ❤️🔥
